01. Choose Journal Style

Select the Flexible Squares layout "Autumn" for variations #1&3, and "Greys" for #2&4, in "Select a New Theme".

02. Choose a Page Setup

i. Set Advertisement display to Horizontal or Between Entries
ii. Select 2 Column (sidebar on right) or 2 Column (sidebar on left).

03. Style

Change the "Background color of the outer table" to #222222 (1 & 3) or #FFFFFF (2 & 4).

04. Custom CSS

Ensure Use layout's stylesheet(s) is set to no


Paste code into the Custom Stylesheet box.

If you have problems with a layout, please post them at the FAQ. I unfortunately I cannot help with stylistic edits, but as I said before, go nuts doing so.

Hmmm, maybe. The thing about making a layout like that for myself is that (apart from catering to my every whim), I can control the content in this journal so I don't have to worry about messing the layout up. When making layouts for other people I never know what they're going to put in their journals, and so they have to be a bit more general, more flexible, and more easy to change.

That's very true. Personally, I like layouts that are wide for any photographs and dark text on light for easy reading. But impractical layouts (or at least less practical ones) are really the most stunning layouts. If you enjoy making this sort of thing, then make it. I would love to see more like it - it gives me a glorious thrill. :)

Besides, there are so many people, there's always someone who can use the layout.

That's a good point. I guess I've been taking a sort of modernist "Accessible design for everyone!" approach rather than making things that are perhaps more bespoke and intimate. There's also a temptation, I think, when designing within a community (I mean amongst other LJ layout makers) to find a niche and work on that, rather than diversifying.
